Pet-Friendly Vacation Destinations in the U.S.

on April 29, 2017

If you're planning a summer vacation and want to bring your pet along, you may want to consult a recent report ranking 2017’s Most Pet-Friendly U.S. Vacation Destinations. The report was put out by RewardExpert, a website that helps travelers "get the maximum benefit for their spending and flying."

Depending on the type of vacation you're interested in, they can recommend the best city to visit with your pet. The rankings were determined by comparing "53 of the largest metropolises in the United States and evaluated them on ten key metrics broken down into three categories: Pet Needs, Pet Recreation, and City Profile."

  • For barks and recreation

The best city for pet-friendly hiking is Pittsburg, PA. Pittsburgh has the most hiking trails per residents, with 18 trails per hundred thousand people, which means there is plenty of trail for everyone to sniff.

However, if green spaces are more you or your dog's thing, Portland, OR is the city with the most dog parks per capita.

  • For the foodie fido

Miami, FL is where you want to be. This city has over 780 pet-friendly restaurants and cafes per capita and the warm weather lends itself nicely to dining al fresco with your pup. As an added bonus, Miami also boasts the most pet stores and veterinarians of all the cities in the study.

  • For the tail-wagging tourist

The best city for pet-inclusive tourist activities is St. Louis, MO. There are 81 sights to take in with your pet, including wineries, sculpture parks and the Museum of the Dog. (And it's also the home of Pet Junkie!)

  • For the pampered pooch

If you're looking for the best of the best, Tampa FL is the city that ranked the highest across all three categories. Additionally, Tampa hosts the most pet-friendly hotels per capita in the United States.

Happy tails and travels!
